Office building Westerhoven
Project information
Location: Westerhoven, The Netherlands
Project type: Commercial Building
Design focus: Architectural Technology & Building Detailing
Project Overview
This academic project focused on the complete architectural and technical detailing of a commercial building in Westerhoven. The primary objective was to translate the architectural concept into a technically feasible building through the selection and application of appropriate construction methods, materials and detailing principles.
A high degree of freedom was provided in developing the technical solutions. This required careful consideration of material combinations, façade and roof construction, junctions, connections and other building details, while maintaining the architectural character of the original design.
The architecture takes inspiration from the traditional barn, without simply reproducing its historical appearance. Instead, familiar characteristics of rural architecture are reinterpreted through contemporary construction, materialisation and transparency. The prominent pitched roof refers to the archetypal form of a farmhouse while also establishing a relationship with the neighbouring residential building.
An important aspect of the design philosophy was to avoid a purely nostalgic or retrospective architectural language. Rather than copying traditional stylistic elements, the project explores how recognisable forms and proportions can be translated into contemporary architecture. This allows the building to respond sensitively to its characteristic surroundings while retaining its own architectural identity.
The technical development followed the same principle. Conventional and proven construction techniques were combined with carefully considered materials and details to create a coherent relationship between architectural expression, construction and materialisation.
