Project information
Location: Eindhoven, The Netherlands
Project type: Academic Research / Master’s Thesis
Institution: Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e)
Field: Timber Engineering
Project overview
This research was conducted at Eindhoven University of Technology as part of the Master’s degree programme in Architecture, Building and Planning, with a specialisation in Structural Design.
The research focused on the pull-out strength and structural behaviour of glued-in threaded rods in glued laminated timber (glulam). These connections can be used to connect structural timber elements or to reinforce timber in areas subjected to high stresses perpendicular to the grain, helping to prevent splitting.
Experimental testing, numerical modelling and analytical methods were combined to gain a deeper understanding of the structural behaviour and load-bearing capacity of glued-in rod connections.
Research Scope
The research investigated the influence of three key parameters on the pull-out strength and structural behaviour of glued-in threaded rods in glulam timber:
- Timber grain orientation at 0°, 45° and 90°
- Combined axial and transverse loading
- Unintentional inclination of the threaded rod
The experimental results were evaluated and compared with numerical and analytical models to obtain a better understanding of the influence of these parameters on connection behaviour and resistance.
Research Methods
• Analytical research
• Experimental research
• Numerical research (Finite element modelling)
• Evaluation and comparison of experimental, numerical and analytical results
Publication
The research was completed as a Master’s thesis at Eindhoven University of Technology and is available through the TU/e Research Portal.
